Rotation: 3D Story Worlds

For this rotation, I decided to create a witch’s house, or fairy hut. I began by watching the videos provided on Moodle about how to use Maya. I ran a few tests on Maya before commencing work on my final project. I struggled to manipulate shapes and become comfortable with the interface. With assistance from Ben, my group, and a few online tutorials, I was able to start work on my project.

I began by compiling references for my house on Padlet and creating a basic diorama sketch of what I wanted to produce.

Once I finalised my sketch, I moved on to Maya. I generated a cube then scaled it up to the size I wanted my house to be. I divided it into four subdivisions and created the roof shape. I selected the face of the base, shrinking it to give it the slightly slanted look reminiscent of houses from my Padlet board. Then, I created the wooden pillars on the four corners of the house and the roof, from a cube. To make sure they were all even, I duplicated them and rotated them across the central axis of my workspace. I inserted edge loops on the roof to add a depress in the ceiling. I then added the tiling on the roof, by adding subdivisions and edge loops on a cube, then extruding the square faces. I duplicated these twice on each side to create a tiled effect, then added a bevel. I added the pipe, the door, the windows and the bucket. The last few details I added were the chimney; I extruded a face from the roof then used the extrude tool extensively to create the rim of the chimney. Lastly, I added a surface to each of my polygons then coloured them using a colour scheme I devised from looking at my Padlet. Lastly, I added a skydome with a light yellow hue.

I feel that my final piece could have had a more cohesive colour scheme, something more whimsical as in my references. I am otherwise quite pleased with the result.
